Trade, Build, Settle

In Catan, players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players build by spending resources such as wood, grain, brick, sheep, and ore β each of which is produced by different terrain hexes on the modular board.
What makes Catan special is the trading. Players can negotiate with each other on their turn, creating a constantly shifting social dynamic where alliances form and break based on who needs which resource. The goal is simple β reach 10 victory points first β but the path there is never the same twice.
Released in 1995 and originally titled “The Settlers of Catan,” this game is credited with launching the modern board game renaissance. It remains one of the best gateway games ever made β approachable enough for casual players but with enough strategic depth to keep hobbyists engaged.
